Chapter 19

I opened my eyes to the dying light. Maybe I was dying. I felt like I might be. In the cool dirt under the cypress, I let myself think of Melodie mou and Gaia mou for the first time. Gaia had already lost her mother. What must she be thinking? And did Melodie think I suddenly didn’t want our child? That I had left at the first sign she might be carrying my baby? Surely, she could not think that. After all that our time together had brought us, she knew I would never leave her. I had to hope she might realise that her fake sister had something to do with my disappearance. Only Evangelina would do this, would take me from my family. We welcomed her into our home with endless hospitality, yet she took advantage of us and tried to ruin our lives. But, no. She hadn’t managed to do that. I had to remind myself that she hadn’t. There was still hope, although like the water in my body, it was shrivelling away.

If I had any moisture left inside me, I would have cried. If I had any energy to be angry, I would have shouted to God about my pain. Instead, I moved away from the base of the tree, only gently slipping into the bowl of the mountains. Thinking of it as a bowl made me wonder if I was close to Old Perithia. My head was too painful to think much about geography, but the solid grey rocks that stuck out of the face of the mountains in places seemed to fit.

Carefully, I scooted along, deciding that evening and night might be the best time to move. Sleep during the day and move at night until I could find someone. Sitting as comfortably as I could, I looked down at myself. Forgetting the green and brown stains on my T-shirt, my forearms were both oozing blood and my left ankle was throbbing. I think that it was hurt when I fell off the tree, and it was the same foot I got caught in the brambles with all my weight pulling against it. I stretched out my legs. The ankle was swelling and there was no way I could sit about and rest. Dusk was already hanging over my head. I would never let my girls down, so I forced myself to my knees, then to a standing position and limped my way along for a few paces.

This is where I had my second piece of luck. Caught in a bush that was bursting with bright yellow flowers was a bottle. It was the colour of the flowers that drew my eye, and luckily I spotted the red bottle lid among the yellow.

I hobbled towards it and yanked it free. It was an almost-full cola bottle someone had discarded from the road above. The label was sun-bleached and it was as warm as piss. It could have been down there for years.
